Description

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text](min. 2 pax)

The Meru National Park is located 348kms away from Nairobi, in Meru county. The parks ecosystem comprises of luxuriant jungle, coursing rivers, verdant swamp, khaki grasslands and gaunt termite cathedrals. Its landscape is majorly thorny bush land in the North, wooded grasslands in the West and open grassland elsewhere. The park also offer dense riverine forests of Doum and Raffia palm.
The Park also became famous because it is one out of the two areas that Joy Adamson and her spouse (naturalists) raised Elsa the lioness. Their experiences raising the lioness were made famous by the book and award winning movie Born Free. The lioness was also buried in this park, and Joy’s ashes were spread on the gravesite.

The area is a transition point from central Kenyan to northern Kenyan wildlife, and here you can see Burchell’s and Grevy’s zebras, Masai and reticulated giraffes, Grant’s gazelles, gerenuks etc. The park is criss-crossed by numerous streams, but Tana River (longest in Kenya) is what catches the eye. All of which attract an interesting variety of animals. Also, the water is populated by crocodiles, hippos and water-fowl as well as herons.

Samburu National Reserve is famous for its numerous number of rare and unique species of animals located in the pristine wilderness that’s 165 square kilometers. The reserve borders the Ewaso Ng’iro river to the south. The reserve has a great number of flora and fauna species. The major plant species in the surrounding areas are thorny scrubs, but the reserve also has other species. This therefore means that Samburu’s landscape is scrubby, has open bush land and savanna, fringing riverine forest of acacias, and large doum palms extending along the edge of river Ewaso Ng’iro.
The main areas for game viewing are along the banks of river Ewaso Ng’iro. Its a great location since the animals come here to hydrate (guaranteed game viewing)!This river is the heart of the park, as it not only makes it beautiful and photogenic (contrasting against the bright and dry red soil), but also attracts a diversity of wildlife all year round. With crocodiles and hippos hiding in the shallow sand banks, surprises always await! Samburu National Reserve also has a particularly high elephant populations, and big families of them too! This is because the park is a migratory corridor that herds use daily, moving between Laikipia, Samburu and Mount Kenya for food, mating and minerals.

Highlights;

  • Extensive game drives and game viewing that includes but not limited to elephants, hippos, lions, leopards, cheetahs, rare antelopes, the Lesser Kudu, duikers and dik-diks, large herds of buffaloes and hartebeests, giraffes and gazelles.
  • Scenic views, and spectacular landscapes with rivers, woodlands, forests and many more natural features.
  • Visit to the Equator.
  • Insights on the lives of the Adamson’s (naturalists who raised a lioness).
  • Large populations of Nile Crocodiles at the Ewaso Ng’iro river.
  • Rare species of animals endemic to Samburu Game Reserve.
